Amos Family Foundation Gives Generous Gift
Wesley Woods’ southwest Atlanta retirement community, Asbury Harris Epworth Towers (AHET), has 134 one-bedroom apartments and 52 efficiency apartments. All of the older adults who reside at AHET receive HUD rental subsidies to assist them with their monthly rental fee.
More than ever before, however, today’s retirees are expressing a desire for larger apartments with more square footage, and AHET efficiencies have become increasingly hard to fill. Because HUD sets a resident’s rental rates at 30% of their income regardless of the size apartment that they are leasing, there is no financial incentive to living in a smaller space. To better meet the needs of these low-income retirees, we will convert the remaining efficiency units to one-bedroom units. Since there is a waiting list for the larger units, doing so will improve the occupancy rate and the revenue stream at AHET.
The Daniel P. Amos Family Foundation has helped enable us to make this ambitious plan a reality by granting $100,000 to the apartment conversion project. Daniel P. Amos, President and CEO of Aflac and the son of company founder Paul S. Amos, is extremely active in the community and truly works to “gives back” through the generosity of both the Daniel P. Amos Family Foundation and the Aflac Foundation. On behalf of older adults in the southwest Atlanta area, thank you Mr. Amos!
